The Big Day
We’ve been discussing CONTRADINE for the past 3 months and it feels unreal that this day is finally here. We’ve encountered setbacks and last-minute changes, but the Haven team is by our side throughout this process. (They even had the café’s huge pinball machine removed from the corner by our installation!)
This week our most significant challenges are with the burning process, which is taxing on both our flatmates and us. We are grateful that they have been willing to tolerate a smoke-filled house up until today, as well as a smoke-filled porch and balcony. Apparently, we have also caught the attention of the local neighborhood, and neighbors regularly contact Haven to make sure that there isn't an actual kitchen fire.
Every element of the project involves a different type of protection for pouring cement, burning food and cocktails, and baking many layers of cake. We wear wet scarves around our faces, rubber gloves, and eye protection daily. We are finally getting used to our attire which has been slowly changing by becoming more industrialized day by day.
Intrigue and anticipation are surrounding our project as only a few people know the entire details of the night’s events. This enigmatic element of the work has actually become part of our process and it’s possible that we will use this tone for future interventions.
Wish us luck for tonight and we will be back with documentation soon!
